Yes. You read correctly. She was charged with Domestic Battery by beer.

Melva Ann Wixon, 49, was arrested Tuesday night on a Domestic Battery charge after a wet incident at her apartment.

Here’s what the po-po have to say:

Wixon got home about 7:00 p.m. at an apartment she shares with her boyfriend, Eric Hartman. She had been drinking at a bar. He had been sleeping.

She was angry at him because he plans to move to Ohio. So she poured beer on him. This woke him up.

Displeased by her action, Hartman called the police.

Wixon was still at the Pinellas County Jail Wednesday morning awaiting her Advisory/ First Appearance before a Judge.Unfortunately, the brand of beer she wielded was not included in the incident report. Let’s only hope it wasn’t something good like Guinness or Newcastle!!

In another addition of: “Only in Florida.” More specifically, “Only in the Tampa Bay area.” This story was featured in this mornings St. Pete Times.

This was probably not the best Thanksgiving for Ronald R. Conkright. His troubles first started when he called 911 at 11:47 p.m. Thursday (Thanksgiving evening). He told the 911 operator: “I’m looking for a friend. It was one last joke.”

Pinellas County sheriff’s deputies showed up at his home at 2504 55th Avenue North, but Conkright, 62, didn’t answer the door.

At 2:26 a.m. Friday, he called 911 again. This time he reported a Domestic Violence dispute with his wife. According to his arrest affidavit, he told the 911 operator: “I hurt my wife and she is in heaven.”

Deputies returned to his home (for a second time now). This time Conkright answered the door. After talking with him, deputies discovered Conkright was not married. They then discovered more.

“When asked what his emergency was, and why he called 911, Conkright brought deputies into his home to look for his wife, and to show us an amount of marijuana, over 20 grams, which was on his kitchen table,” the arrest affidavit states.

Conkright then told the deputies: “You can arrest me now.”

He was charged with Making a False 911 Call, Felony Possession of Marijuana (over 20 grams) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Not surprisingly, Conkright’s arrest affidavit states that he showed an indication of “drug influence.”

Corey Robert Munn, a 40-year old St. Pete man, has been charged with having sex with a woman and not informing her of his HIV-infected status. According to arrest affidavits filed with the Clerk of Court, Munn had a consensual sexual relationship with a woman for 18 months but neglected to tell her he was infected with the virus. For the original story and reader comments, check out this week’s Tampa Bay Online article.Having prosecuted Sex Crimes for the State Attorney’s Office in Clearwater, I know that this type of sex offense is (fortunately) not-so-common in the Tampa Bay area (or at least it is not-so-common to report the commission of this offense).

The Blake & Dorsten, P.A. in Clearwater provides an aggressive, experienced and zealous defense for individuals that have been arrested, or are under investigation, for various sexually-motivated offenses. This year to date, the Blake & Dorsten, P.A. has represented individuals charged with the following offenses: Capital Sexual Battery, Lewd or Lascivious Molestation, Lewd or Lascivious Battery, Failure to Register as a Sexual Offender, Possession of Child Pornography, Unlawful Sexual Activity with a Minor and Transmission of Harmful Material to a Minor by Electronic Communication.

Another week has passed and another NFL star has given me something to blog about. We can now add San Diego Charger Shawne Merriman’s case to the list of celebrity athletes that the Blake & Dorsten, P.A. in Clearwater will be following. For more information on the alleged Domestic Battery and False Imprisonment charges, committed upon MTV reality star Tila “Tequila” Nguyen, you can check out the full story online at CNN.com.According to the CNN story, Tila Tequila told deputies that she had been choked and physically restrained by Merriman when she attempted to leave his residence in suburban San Diego at approximately 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning.

Merriman’s attorney, Todd Macaluso, has indicated that Nguyen was “extremely intoxicated and inebriated” and that his client had made arrangements for her to leave his house. However, the district attorney’s office will determine whether criminal charges will be pursued.

As “Tila Tequila,” Nguyen starred on the MTV reality shows “A Shot at Love with Tila Tequilqa” in 2007 and “A Shot at Love 2 with Tila Tequila” in 2008.Merriman, who has made three Pro Bowls, is entering his fifth year with the San Diego Charges after playing college football at my alma mater: the University of Maryland @ College Park.

In one of the more irresponsible cases to catch the media’s attention this week, a New Port Richey woman was arrested for Driving Under the Influence. And while that, in-and-of-itself, is not real newsworthy, the fact that she had four (4) children in her car and a blood-alcohol level of .113 (a good bit over the legal limit of .08 in the State of Florida) has turned a normal DUI case into a case of Child Abuse and/or Child Neglect.

For more information on this case, check out the original story on Bay News 9.

While the Blake & Dorsten, P.A. in Clearwater handles many DUI and other Traffic-Related cases throughout the Tampa Bay area, it does not support or condone this type of reckless activity. Continue reading

A recent story in the St. Petersburg Times has indicated that crime is on the rise in the City of St. Petersburg, Florida. According to the latest numbers, Burglary
and Theft Crimes are rapidly increasing.

For the full story, click here:

Police Chief Chuck Harmon has suggested that the rapid rise in crime is due to many factors including the current economic crisis, rising unemployment and home foreclosures.

While Property Crimes like Auto Theft are on the rise, most Crimes of Violence are down this year. Robbery is down 12 percent this year and the number of Homicides have been cut in half. These statistics have lead to a steady increase in business for the Blake & Dorsten, P.A. in Clearwater. In another “only in the Tampa Bay area” type of case, a 29-year old Palm Harbor man was recently arrested for assaulting his 8 1/2 month pregnant wife while aboard an AirTran Airways flight from Baltimore to Tampa. This is an interesting twist on the typical Domestic Violence case since it occured mid-flight and is therefore a Federal Crime.

For more information on this case, click here:

The Blake & Dorsten, P.A., in Clearwater, handles many Domestic Violence cases throughout the Tampa Bay area.

Its important to remember that the State of Florida has a “pro prosecution” policy when it comes to Domestic Violence cases. That means, even if the victim may not want to press charges, the State of Florida will frequently file charges anyway. In my experience, these cases are best handled when an experienced criminal defense attorney is contacted immediately upon arrest (or even prior to a formal arrest).

If you or a family member has been accused of a Domestic Violence offense, the Blake & Dorsten, P.A. stands ready to assist you. 365/24/7.
